Léoville Barton is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, tannic and austere when young, but develops intense blackcurrant and cassis notes, as well as classic cedar Saint-Julien characteristics.
The vineyard, which has gravel over clay soils, is planted 74 per cent to Cabernet Sauvignon, 23 per cent to Merlot and 3 per cent to Cabernet Franc. After a manual harvest, fermentation takes place in large temperature-controlled wooden vats, and then 50 per cent of the wine is aged in new oak barrels.
